History of Madurai:
A traditional village, Madurai is proud of its 2500 years of heritage. A shopping center since the year 550, Madurai was the capital of Pandya kingdom. Madurai is in the middle of the southern tip of Indian peninsula. Madurai is one of the Hindu places of pilgrimage the world's most popular.
The Meenakshi Temple is one of the largest temple complexes in India. It is a double rectangular sanctuary, the temple dedicated to Meenakshi Sud (wife of Shiva) and the other to Shiva. This is the Mecca of Madurai, a virtual city within the city.
Before leaving the temple, we will devote some time to visit the Museum which is installed in the mandapa pillars of miles (Ticket Rs 2, Rs 5 more for the camera) is near the gopuram. Poorly maintained, dust, without appropriate lighting, with no label information, this museum, which would need a complete renovation, is interesting for several reasons. First, an architectural point of view, we admire the great and beautiful corridor that faces the entrance, while lighting a half-darkness, with pillars decorated with mythological monsters. The first two pillars are engraved with two performances of a beautiful Ganesh standing left, with his Shakti seated on his knee, and right of Kartikeya, the brother of Ganesh sitting on a peacock, his animal-vehicle.
The second reason that leads us to advise the visit of this museum is the presence of a number of beautiful bronzes of deities, Chola period, as well as stone sculptures. Among a jumble several Ganesh, Gana Bhuta, Nagaraj, Shiva Nataraja, Nandi, Yali, and Brahma Ratha.
Finally, on the other side of the street that passes the gopuram of the East, Pudhu Mandapa was transformed employing a bazaar, among others, tailors.
It may, in the evening, attend the middle of large crowds of worshipers at the ceremony sleeping deities of the temple. Thus, the priests take, music, the god Shiva Minakshi join.
A few miles from downtown, we stop a moment to Mariamman Tepakhulam, large rectangular basin built in the 17th century when, in January-February, on the occasion of the feast of the full moon, the effigies of Shiva and the goddess is richly adorned, were transported with great ceremony and installed on a raft.
The Gandhi Museum is devoted to the stages of the struggle of India for its independence since the nineteenth century. The views on the action of the colonial power (Great Britain) are biased, but informative.
